What is a Neuropathic Ulcer?

A neuropathic ulcer occurs due to nerve damage, often in individuals with conditions such as diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, or spinal cord injuries. These ulcers typically form on the feet when a person loses sensation in the affected area. Without the ability to feel pain, minor injuries may go unnoticed, leading to infection and the development of chronic ulcers.

Causes:

Neuropathic ulcers are primarily caused by nerve damage, which can result from various underlying medical conditions. Here are some common causes of neuropathic ulcers:

  • Diabetes
  • Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Alcoholism

Treatment:

Neuropathic ulcers require a multidisciplinary approach, involving various treatments tailored to each patient’s needs. Below are some common options for addressing neuropathic ulcers:

Wound Care: Cleaning the wound, removing dead tissue, and applying specialized dressings.

Offloading: Relieving pressure on the affected area using specialized shoes, braces, or casts to redistribute weight.

Medications: Topical or systemic medications like antibiotics, analgesics, and growth factors to control pain, prevent infection, and promote healing.

Management of Underlying Conditions: Proper care of conditions like diabetes or peripheral neuropathy is essential.

Lifestyle Changes: Quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, and regular exercise can help reduce the risk of ulcers.

Bioengineered Deraml Product: Advanced skin substitutes used to treat wounds that don’t respond to traditional methods, promoting healing and tissue regeneration. These products provide a protective barrier and support skin growth.
