What to Expect from a C-Section Wound

Enhance Healing and Reduce Infection Risks

A C-section is a major surgery, and understanding the recovery process can help you manage your healing better. You can expect some pain, as simple movements like moving in bed, coughing, and laughing can be uncomfortable. Painkillers can help, but if the pain is not controlled, consult your midwife or gynecologist. Vaginal discharge and bleeding are normal post-operation. The surgical incision will typically be 10-15 cm long, located just below the bikini line. It may be closed with dissolvable stitches or stitches that need to be removed after five days.

Proper C-Section Wound Care

For optimal healing, follow these wound care guidelines:

  • In the First 48 Hours: Keep the wound covered with a waterproof, absorbent dressing. The hospital staff will change it if necessary.
  • After 48 Hours: A midwife or gynecologist may apply another dressing, which can remain in place for up to three days if there’s no leakage or additional pain. Remove the dressing on the fifth day after delivery if it hasn’t been removed already.
  • General Care: To promote healing, wear loose-fitting underwear to prevent irritation of the wound. Until your wound is healed avoid lifting anything heavier than your baby. Make sure to rest whenever possible, maintain a healthy diet, and stay hydrated. When coughing, laughing, or making sudden movements, support your wound to minimize discomfort.

Make sure to consult with your midwife or gynecologist before leaving the hospital and ask about wound care options.

Recognizing Infection Signs

According to the National Library of Medicine approximately one in ten women develop a wound infection after a C-section. To ensure prompt treatment, watch for these signs of infection:

  • Increased pain in the wound area
  • Redness, swelling, or heat around the wound
  • Green or yellow discharge from the wound
  • The wound appears to be gaping or open
  • Unpleasant vaginal discharge
  • Feeling feverish or having a high temperature

Recognizing these signs early and seeking prompt medical care can prevent complications and promote better healing outcomes. If you are worried about your surgical wound, visit Jovie Wound Care today for a consultation.
