Jennifer, a 66-year-old retired schoolteacher and devoted grandmother, had been enjoying the early years of her retirement. With a passion for swimming, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren, she was looking forward to this new chapter in her life. However, her plans were interrupted when she developed a sacral pressure ulcer following an extended hospital stay. This wound not only caused her significant physical pain but also disrupted her ability to engage in the activities she loved, leaving her emotionally distressed. 

When Jennifer was referred to Jovive Wound Care by her hospitalist at Redlands Hospital, she was in a wheelchair, struggling to walk on her own. The wound on her sacrum had taken a toll on her overall health, and she was desperate for a solution. Trusting the recommendation, she sought out the specialized care she needed, hoping it would bring relief from the pain and frustration that had taken over her life. 

Led by Physician Assistant Madison Baker, the wound care team provided a comprehensive treatment plan to promote healing. They also provided support on lifestyle modifications, discussing diet, sleep hygiene, and the importance of mental health. This holistic approach was key to Jennifer’s recovery. 

Jennifer’s wound began tunneling, a complication in which the wound extends deeper into the surrounding tissue, forming a narrow channel beneath the skin. This required surgical debridement to remove the damaged tissue to allow healing. The team quickly adapted to this setback, introducing hydrocellular foam and Allevyn dressings to her treatment plan—which significantly advanced her healing rates. 

Week by week, Jennifer began to see improvements in her wound and also her overall quality of life. “Not only did they provide medical healing, but the mental and emotional part had as big or a bigger impact,” Jennifer shared.  

Reflecting on her experience, Jennifer expressed deep gratitude for the support she received. “Madison was always willing to take the extra time and talk to me about what I could do to make this heal quicker,” she noted. The culmination of Jennifer’s journey was marked by a joyful return to the activities she loved. After six and a half months of dedicated treatment at Jovive Wound Care, her wound finally healed. Jennifer, who had been unable to swim for three years due to her wound and health, celebrated her recovery by getting back in the pool—a moment she had longed for. “I got to get in the swimming pool this summer… to celebrate my wound finally healed,” she shared with joy. For Jennifer, this milestone represented not just the closure of a wound but the reopening of her life. She now looks forward to traveling this fall to see family and spending more time with her grandchildren.
