Nancy Angus’ Healing Journey
Ashley Khansari, RN, BSN, CWOCN and Bill Khoury, MD with patient Nancy Angus
Nancy, a retired San Diego Police Department employee, enjoyed a fulfilling life filled with travel, her love for dogs, and a long, happy marriage. However, her peaceful retirement took an unexpected turn on May 8th, 2024, when a simple misstep led to a significant injury.
Nancy, who often calls herself a klutz, was carrying in a box in flip-flops from her garage when her phone rang in the kitchen. She turned to answer the call, but her foot got caught in plastic that was on the steps. As she tripped, and flailed, attempting to sit on the step, but instead hit the corner of the step, causing a deep and painful laceration on the bottom half of her leg.
Bleeding profusely, she called out to her husband, who called 911. The fire truck and ambulance arrived, helping to stop the bleeding before transporting her to a nearby ER. At the emergency room, the doctors could not stitch the wound due to the thinness of her skin and the nature of the injury.
The ER doctor referred her to Jovive Wound Care for specialized treatment. Nancy called the clinic the next morning and was relieved when they fit her in that very day. Her journey with Jovive Wound Care began with twice-weekly visits to clean the wound, apply healing treatments, and replace bandages. Once the wound was under control, her visits were reduced to once a week.
Nancy’s care team was led by Bill Khoury, MD, working collaboratively with Dania Yosef, DO and Kenneth Kushner, MD. The team employed innovative treatments, including a honey mixture and a zinc oxide-based covering. Nancy’s resilience and the comprehensive care she received led to her wound healing in two months with barely a scar—a result that left her both relieved and grateful.
Reflecting on her experience, Nancy shared, “I can’t express enough gratitude for the care I received. It was more than just medical treatment; it was a group of people who cared about my well-being and worked tirelessly to get me back on my feet.”
Now, Nancy is excited to return to her active lifestyle. She looks forward to traveling with her friend, playing with her dog, and celebrating life’s milestones.
